Which Modern Fitted Cloth Nappy Should You Choose? Do I Get Waterproof AIO Or Regular? Tips Here!

My first baby was born in 2005 and as a young mother I was really not sure which way I should go with choosing nappies for my precious bundle. My mother used cloth nappies with all 3 of her children and I grew up just knowing that I would use cloth with my children when they came along. What I did not know was just how confusing the whole Cloth Diaper process would become.

What is an AIO, an AI2 or a regular cloth nappy? Should I use a Modern Fitted Cloth Nappy or a regular square nappy? Decisions, decisions!!

I started out purchasing a pack of coloured square cloth nappies that need to be folded before each use. These are great, but I did find that on a newborn they seemed to be rather bulky. You also need to decide if you will use Pins (a bit daunting to a new mum) or a tool like a Snappy to secure the diaper once it is fitted on baby.

Then I decided to try the fitted cloth nappy. These are a cloth nappy that is already shaped ready for use, the same shape as a disposable nappy. WOW, these are just so easy to use, even the Daddies can do these cloth nappy changes! Most secure with 2 or more strips of Velcro. Then I discovered the AIO nappy. AIO stands for All In One (this also took me a while to work out). This means that the nappy is made with a waterproof layer either inside the nappy or the outside layer of fabric is waterproof, often times PUL is used to accomplish this. These are THE greatest idea, they are just like using disposable nappies in that they are shaped, waterproof and you don’t need anything extra to secure them.

I tried the All in Two (AI2) nappies as well. They are the fitted cloth diaper without the extra waterproofing layer of PUL inside, so these require a cover to waterproof them, hence the All in Two pieces.

I used the AIO nappies for quite a while but there are so many brands out there and I just could not find the one diaper with all of the good points that I was looking for. So I took a giant leap and started out on my trusty Janome and whipped up a prototype with all of the features that I wanted in a nappy. Many designs and bolts of material later and I finally had one that I was happy with.

I decided that I had to have a diaper that was waterproof, they are just so easy and you don’t need any further covers or equipment with you to change the nappy. Hence, I placed a layer of PolyUrethane Lamenate (PUL) inside the diaper. I was also unhappy with Velcro, it scratches baby’s skin, catches on Mum’s clothes and shock horror, baby actually learns quite quickly how to undo the velcro on their own! So I designed a diaper with Snaps on it which actually allows the nappy to fit for so much longer. I put 3 snaps on either side so that the nappy grows with baby, as bub gets bigger, just move along to the next press stud snap, simple. I now had a diaper that was basically a one size fits all. (My daughter wore hers until she was potty trained at 16 months).

I was also dissatisfied with the absorbency that I was getting from most fitted cloth nappies on the market, so I designed the diaper with layers of super absorbent bamboo wadding, cotton wadding, hemp and towelling in the interior of the nappy. I also decided to use fabrics that were good on my daughters skin as she had mild eczema. I now use hemp, bamboo, cotton towelling and flannel to make the nappies.

I gave birth to my son mid 2008 and he has not known a day without wearing his cloth nappies, I have all sorts of prints and designs so he gets all the boyish cars, camo print, lions, tractors etc. My daughter wore all the girly prints like butterflies, kittens, pooh bear, jelly beans, flowers etc. I even started embroidering the diapers with baby’s name, cute sayings like “I didn’t ask to be Born this Cute” and funny ones like “Warning- Toxic Gas” on the butt. I now get orders for personalised diapers with bubs nickname or given name along with a fitting picture. The options are endless.

Using Cloth nappies is much better for baby, especially if they have skin that is sensitive to heat, rashes etc. Cloth nappies are better for the environment and for so much better for the wallet. Did you know baby will use around 6000 disposable nappies in 2 years, costing you over $2500 and doing endless damage to the environment?

Using a Modern Fitted Cloth AIO Nappy is certainly a choice that I would recommend. Don’t think that choosing cloth is outdated, you really can get some cute and funky designs, but be sure to do your research before purchasing. It is better to buy a diaper that you are happy with from the word go than to buy several that you aren’t happy with before finding “The One”. If you are tossing up between choosing cloth or going with Disposable diapers, please just try a cloth diaper, who knows, you might be like me and never look back!

Another thing you can do in your clothes and not be afraid you spoil it is vaping. If you used to be a heavy smoker, you know how clothes can smell in time. Not the best part of your image, agree? Using a modern box mod with some nice-smelling flavorful e-juice can change your nicotine-taking experience to another level. No more dreadful smell, yellow teeth and finger nails, no more stains and cough. Future is here!
